NOTÍCIAS: MERYL STREEP PREMIADA PELO AFI



Meryl Streep vai ser homenageada pelo AMERICAN FILM INSTITUTE (AFI). A actriz receberá o prémio de carreira desta instituição no dia 10 de Junho de 2004, no Kodak Theatre, de Hollywood.

O prémio de carreira é a mais alta distinção atribuída pelo American Film Institute, entidade dedicada à preservação do património cinematográfico, e também ao ensino das artes de cinema e televisão.

Meryl Streep, nascida a 22 de Junho de 1949, em Summit, New Jersey, é um nomes emblemáticos do cinema americano das últimas três décadas, tendo sido já distinguida duas vezes pela Academia de Artes e Ciências Cinematográficas de Hollywood: Oscar de melhor actriz secundária, em Kramer vs. Kramer/"Kramer Contra Kramer" (1979), e Oscar de melhor actriz, em Sophie's Choice/"A Escolha de Sofia" (1982) . Com a sua nomeação para melhor actriz secundária, em Adaptacion/"Inadaptado" (2002), Meryl Streep igualou o número recorde de nomeações (12) de Katharine Hepburn.

O mais recente filme com Meryl Streep estreado entre nós é The Hours/"As Horas"(2002) , de Stephen Daldry.

Entre os vários projectos em que a actriz está actualmente envolvida incluem-se o remake de The Manchurian Candidate, com direcção de Jonathan Demme (o original, de 1962, foi dirigido por John Frankenheimer), e a nova realização de Jodie Foster, Flora Plum.

A ZERO ACABOU! CHEGA! ESTAMOS CANSADOS!! ACABOU!!!

"A Zero em Comportamento tem passado anos de sacrifício, a viver com o credo na boca, sempre na eminência do dinheiro da bilheteira não chegar para pagar as contas. Estivemos dependentes das flutuações dos humores do público, da chuva, do frio, do calor, dos jogos de futebol na televisão, das estreias do cinema comercial ou dos ciclos de outros cinemas; dependentes dos humores da crítica e do espaço disponível nos jornais, nas rádios ou nas televisões; dependentes ainda da nossa capacidade de distribuir pela cidade os folhetos e os cartazes com a programação, de os enviar a tempo pelo correio ou email.

Estamos cansados porque os donos do Cine-Estúdio 222 não resolvem os imensos problemas que aquela sala, de imenso potencial, tem. Sabemos bem que, por causa das condições da sala, este projecto que tanto trabalho e gozo dá, estava, desde o ínicio, sujeito ao insucesso. E estamos fartos de, sistematicamente, recebermos reclamações de pessoas a dizer que a sala cheira mal, que as cadeiras são desconfortáveis, que chove lá dentro, que a projecção é má, etc etc etc... e de sabermos que é verdade!!!

Estamos cansados de nos dizerem que o nosso projecto é fantástico, maravilhoso, único, etc, etc, etc, mas que é uma pena ser feito naquela sala e de, por isso, nos pedirem, suplicarem, ordenarem, que mudemos de sala e perante a pergunta: “Mas para que sala?”, só ficar o silêncio, por falta de alternativas ou de ideias... E por isso termos de responder: “pois é, a sala é má, mas é a única....”.
Finalmente, estamos cansados e desmotivados por, há que tempos, ouvirmos a Câmara Municipal de Lisboa ou o ICAM dizerem que, de facto, o nosso projecto é fantástico, maravilhoso, único, que merece de ser apoiado, mas até hoje não terem contribuido com nada de concreto!

Por isto tudo e por muito mais que fica por dizer, decidimos parar. Vamos deixar de programar o Cine-Estúdio 222.
O projecto “Zero em Comportamento” vai ficar congelado até melhores dias. Até haver outras condições para se trabalhar. Até alguém finalmente tomar decisões a sério, e não apenas de fachada, e nos alugar, disponibilizar ou oferecer, em condições aceitáveis, uma sala de cinema condigna para fazermos um programa por ano, por cada seis meses, por mês, semana ou dia. Ou então, até alguém perceber que é mais importante haver projectos culturais que se afirmam no dia-a-dia, durante o ano inteiro, do que eventos fugazes, esporádicos, que levantam imensa poeira mas que não deixam ficar nada depois de acontecer. Mas, enfim, há quem prefira ouvir as cigarras do que reparar no trabalho da formiga...

Paramos, mas fazêmo-lo de consciência tranquila porque, ao longo destes anos (e já passaram seis desde o primeiro filme que exibimos no 222), provámos que há públicos para as mais diversas ofertas de cinema (sejam curtas, documentários ou longas dos países mais improváveis). Basta ter vontade e saber chegar a eles (aos públicos e aos filmes).

E quem tiver memória lembrar-se-á, por certo, da oferta de cinema que havia nesta cidade e poderá comparar com o que há hoje... Mas sabemos também que quem tem a iniciativa, desbrava o terreno e lança as sementes, não é necessariamente quem colhe os frutos...

Um grande obrigado a cada um(a) e a todos os que nos foram impulsionando, encorajando e criticando ao longo destes tempos. Isso significa que fizemos a diferença e no fundo isso é mesmo a única coisa que interessa...

Encontramo-nos por aí!"

Olá a todos os cinéfilos!

É com muita satisfação que dedico este post a um dos filmes que ,pela sua magnitude e pela estrela de cartaz (nada mais nada menos que o milionário Tom Cruise), mais burburinho tem causado na imprensa mundial e público cinéfilo - The Last Samurai, épico histórico dirigido por Edward Zwick (Glory (1989)) e oriundo dos estúdios Warner Bros. Nos E.U.A estreia a 5 de Dezeembro deste ano ; já a comunidade cinéfila portuguesa ainda vai ter de esperar até o mês de Janeiro do próximo ano para assitir o filme nos cinemas...

The paths of these two warriors converge when the young Emperor of Japan, wooed by American interests who covet the growing Japanese market, hires Algren to train Japan's first modern, conscript army. But as the Emperor's advisors attempt to eradicate the Samurai in preparation for a more Westernized and trade-friendly government, Algren finds himself unexpectedly impressed and influenced by his encounters with the Samurai. Their powerful convictions remind him of the man he once was.

Thrust now into harsh and unfamiliar territory, with his life and perhaps more important, his soul, in the balance, the troubled American soldier finds himself at the center of a violent and epic struggle between two eras and two worlds, with only his sense of honor to guide him.

Tom Cruise made his film debut in 1981 with the critically acclaimed film Taps and has subsequently experienced a distinguished and distinctive career. He last starred as "pre-cog" specialist John Anderton in Steven Spielberg's futuristic thriller Minority Report, the latest of his many intriguing, ground-breaking and diverse films. Timpothy Spall recently appeared in Douglas McGrath's film retelling of the Charles Dickens classic Nicholas Nickleby. Frequently featured in Mike Leigh's films, Spall made his sixth appearance in the director's most recent offering, All or Nothing. Other collaborations with Mike Leigh include the play Smelling Like A Rat; the BBC film Home Sweet Home; Secrets and Lies, for which he received a BAFTA Award nomination and a London Film Critics nomination; and the critically acclaimed story of Gilbert %26 Sullivan, Topsy Turvy.

He will next star in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azbakan, currently in production and set for a 2004 release.

- Ken Watanabe (Katsumoto)



Ken Watanabe began his career on stage, with the Tokyo-based theater troupe, Madoka. While working with Madoka, he was selected to portray the role of hero in the play Shimodani Mannen-cho Monogatari, directed by Yukio Ninagawa. His performance attracted critical and popular notice.

In 1982, Watanabe made his television debut in Michinaru Hanran (Unknown Rebellion). In 1987, he displayed a regal bearing and powerful presence in NHK's successful Samurai drama series, Dokuganryu Masamune, and went on to earn acclaim in such historical dramas as the TV shows Oda Nobunaga, Chushingura, and the movie Bakumatsu Junjyo Den.

Additionally, Watanabe's consummate skills have contributed to such projects as Ikebukuro West Gate Park, Anata ga Hoshii (I Want You) for television and the movies Space Travelers, Oboreru Sakana (Drowning Fish) and The Sun Rises Again.

In February 2003, Watanabe was seen in Shin Jinginaki Tatakai/Bosatsu (Fight Without Loyalty/Murder) an updated version of the popular Yakuza movie series.

He will also appear in the upcoming film T.R.Y.

- Edward Zwick



Edward Zick (Director / Producer / Screenplay ) began directing and acting in high school and trained as an apprentice at the Academy Festival in Lake Forest, Illinois. While studying literature at Harvard, he continued writing and directing for the theatre. Upon graduation, he was awarded a Rockefeller Fellowship to study in Europe with some of the major innovative theatre companies.

Zwick was accepted as a Directing Fellow at the American Film Institute in 1975. Timothy and the Angel, Zwick's AFI short film, won first place in the student film competition at the 1976 Chicago Film Festival and caught the attention of the producers of the television series, Family. He served as story editor on Family and subsequently became a director and producer.

For his work on the television movie Special Bulletin (as director, producer and co-writer), Zwick received two Emmy Awards. This also marked the beginning of his collaboration with Marshall Herskovitz, with whom he then created the Emmy Award-winning television series thirtysomething. Together Herskovitz and Zwick created The Bedford Falls Company as their home for film and television projects, including the critically acclaimed television series My So-Called Life, Relativity and the Emmy Award and Golden Globe Award-winning series Once and Again.

Zwick began his feature film career directing About Last Night. He went on to direct the Academy Award winning-films Glory and Legends of the Fall, as well as Leaving Normal and Courage Under Fire. Zwick's most recent film was The Siege, starring Denzel Washington and Annette Bening. Zwick and Herskovitz produced Traffic, winner of two Golden Globes and four Academy Awards, directed by Steven Soderbergh. Under the Bedford Falls banner, they also produced I Am Sam.

Zwick has been honored with three Emmy Awards, the Humanitas Prize, the Writer's Guild of America Award, two Peabody Awards, a Director's Guild of America Award, and the Franklin J. Schaffner Alumni Award from the American Film Institute. He received his first Academy Award as a producer for 1999's Best Picture Shakespeare in Love.

Eis umas notícias fresquinhas...

- Novo filme de Julia Roberts será lançado em Dezembro



Mona Lisa Smile, com previsão de lançamento para Portugal em 26 de Dezembro, traz a actriz a contracenar com Kirsten Dunst. Mike Newell é o realizador deste drama cuja história é passada nos anos 50. Roberts é uma professora de História de Arte contractada por uma escola para mulheres de regras rígidas – a despeito de sua reputação liberal. Ela vai inspirar novas formas de pensar entre as suas alunas e o conflito com a administração da escola será inevitável.

O último trabalho de Roberts foi Confessions of a Dangerous Mind / "Confissões de Uma Mente Perigosa". Ela deve ser vista no próximo ano revisitando a sua personagem Tess Ocean, na continuação de Ocean´s Eleven ( Ocean's Twelve ), além de Closer, filme de Mike Nichols onde contracenará com Jude Law. Newell, realizador de Four Weddings and a Funeral / "Quatro Casamentos e um Funeral" , será responsável pelo próximo filme de Harry Potter,Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire, a ser lançado em 2005.

- Estreia segundo filme da realizadora Cláudia Tomaz



Chama-se Nós o novo trabalho da realizadora de Noites. O filme estreia dia 28 de Novembro, meses depois de ter sido exibido no Festival de Locarno, onde recebeu o prémio Boccalino, atribuído pela Câmara da cidade para destacar o melhor filme apresentado.

Nós aborda a relação entre um homem que acabou de sair da prisão após seis anos e uma mulher em busca de uma fuga para sua vida conjugal. Após se terem conhecido através de um anúncio de jornal, perambulam pela vida nocturna de Lisboa. O elenco inclui João Pereira (de Noites) e Alexandra Freudenthal.

Olá a todos os cinéfilos!

Os livros com que vou inaugurar esta secção dedicada à literatura de cinema são três volumes da série Movies of..., lançados no mercado pela editora TASCHEN e que abragem três décadas da história do cinema: 70, 80 e 90. Destas três gosto mais da década de 70 e menos da década de 80, situando-se a década de 90 entre estas duas. Cada filme é analisado de forma detalhada ( com a indicação do ano, nacionalidade, duração, género, créditos, prémios, quotes, comentários externos...) acompanhado de estimulantes e nítidas imagens. Aconselho vivamente a qualquer cinéfilo.

"Whilst their graphically-orientated slabs of cinematic heritage may not contain academically-pitched textual dissections on film-making theory in practice, the content never fails to interest and is sufficiently well-written to actually distract one from idly using the tome as a glorified pictorial "flickbook"!
Naturally, opinion is a subjective thing; and one person's choice of the good and the great from a given era may not coincide with all. That being said, the book has enough of a wide selection to please everybody with an interest in the cinema - and in particular the sometimes genre-defining output that stemmed from the decade.
Anyone looking for a more in-depth textual (as opposed to pictorial in content) breakdown of the stories from behind-the-scenes in Hollywood film-making of the 70's and the studio shenanigans that spawned directors such as Coppola, Scorcese, Fonda, Beatty and (unfortunately..!) Lucas and Spielberg, should be directed to the similarly excellent novel "Easy Riders, Raging Bulls" by Peter Biskind.
Back to this Taschen tome though - a highly recommended purchase!
This book, as with all Taschen's output, excels itself with its standards of printing and design quality and is glorious to behold! (...and no, I don't work for the company - sadly!!)
Simply put... buy it , enjoy it for its content, and marvel at the bargain you've picked up - particularly at the Amazon discount price!

Sinopse:FINDING NEMO, directed by Andrew Stanton and Lee Unkrich, follows Marlin (voiced by Albert Brooks), an overprotective clown fish father, as he desperately searches the sea for his missing son, Nemo (Alexander Gould). Like other Pixar films, FINDING NEMO features a story with heart--this time, a father-and-son tale--and thoroughly charming leads--in this case, Marlin, Nemo, and Dory. And, of course, there's an army of fascinating supporting characters, including Bruce (Barry Humphries), a great white shark on a no-fish diet; Crush (director/screenwriter Stanton), a surfer-dude sea turtle; Peach (Allison Janney), a stuck-to-the-aquarium starfish; and Nigel (Geoffrey Rush), a bold pelican. However, what truly distinguishes NEMO from even its CGI cousins is its stunning depiction of aquatic life, from the colorful creatures on a coral reef to a blue whale on the vast expanse of the open ocean. BURBANK, Calif., November 5, 2003 - On its first day of availability, Walt Disney Pictures presentation of a Pixar Animation Studios film, FINDING NEMO sold 8 million units on DVD and video in North America, it was announced today by Steve Jobs, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Pixar Animation Studios (Nasdaq: PIXR), Michael Eisner, Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS) and Bob Chapek, President of Buena Vista Home Entertainment. The 8 million units sold to date has FINDING NEMO "swimming circles" around the previous industry record of first day sales of 5 million units held by MONSTERS, INC., also a Walt Disney Pictures presentation of a Pixar Animation Studios film. Based on this first day sales figure alone, FINDING NEMO is now on track to be the best-selling DVD and video of 2003 and the top selling DVD of all time.

"Finding Nemo" has all of the usual pleasures of the Pixar animation style--the comedy and wackiness of "Toy Story" or "Monsters Inc." or "A Bug's Life." And it adds an unexpected beauty, a use of color and form that makes it one of those rare movies where I wanted to sit in the front row and let the images wash out to the edges of my field of vision. The movie takes place almost entirely under the sea, in the world of colorful tropical fish--the flora and fauna of a shallow warm-water shelf not far from Australia. The use of color, form and movement make the film a delight even apart from its story.

There is a story, though, one of those Pixar inventions that involves kids on the action level while adults are amused because of the satire and human (or fishy) comedy. The movie involves the adventures of little Nemo, a clown fish born with an undersized fin and an oversized curiosity. His father, Marlin, worries obsessively over him, because Nemo is all he has left: Nemo's mother and all of her other eggs were lost to barracudas. When Nemo goes off on his first day of school, Marlin warns him to stay with the class and avoid the dangers of the drop-off to deep water, but Nemo forgets, and ends up as a captive in the salt-water aquarium of a dentist in Sydney. Marlin swims off bravely to find his missing boy, aided by Dory, a blue tang with enormous eyes who he meets along the way.

These characters are voiced by actors whose own personal mannerisms are well known to us; I recognized most of the voices, but even the unidentified ones carried buried associations from movie roles, and so somehow the fish take on qualities of human personalities. Marlin, for example, is played by Albert Brooks as an overprotective, neurotic worrywart, and Dory is Ellen DeGeneres as helpful, cheerful and scatterbrained (she has a problem with short-term memory).

The Pixar computer animators, led by writer-director Andrew Stanton, create an undersea world that is just a shade murky, as it should be; we can't see as far or as sharply in sea water, and so threats materialize more quickly, and everything has a softness of focus. There is something dreamlike about the visuals of "Finding Nemo," something that evokes the reverie of scuba-diving.

The picture's great inspiration is to leave the sea by transporting Nemo to that big tank in the dentist's office. In it we meet other captives, including the Moorish Idol fish Gill (voice by Willem Dafoe), who are planning an escape. Now it might seem to us that there is no possible way a fish can escape from an aquarium in an office and get out of the window and across the highway and into the sea, but there is no accounting for the ingenuity of these creatures, especially since they have help from a conspirator on the outside--a pelican with the voice of Geoffrey Rush.

It may occur to you that many pelicans make a living by eating fish, not rescuing them, but some of the characters in this movie have evolved admirably into vegetarians. As Marlin and Dory conduct their odyssey, for example, they encounter three carnivores who have formed a chapter of Fish-Eaters Anonymous, and chant slogans to remind them that they abstain from fin-based meals.

The first scenes in "Finding Nemo" are a little unsettling, as we realize the movie is going to be about fish, not people (or people-based characters like toys and monsters). But of course animation has long since learned to enlist all other species in the human race, and to care about fish quickly becomes as easy as caring about mice or ducks or Bambi.

When I review a movie like "Finding Nemo," I am aware that most members of its primary audience do not read reviews. Their parents do, and to them and adults who do not have children as an excuse, I can say that "Finding Nemo" is a pleasure for grown-ups. There are jokes we get that the kids don't, and the complexity of Albert Brooks' neuroses, and that enormous canvas filled with creatures that have some of the same hypnotic beauty as--well, fish in an aquarium. They may appreciate another novelty: This time the dad is the hero of the story, although in most animation it is almost always the mother.

Olá a todos os cinéfilos !

Este mês gostava de salientar o lançamento em formato DVD de quatro grandes obras cinematográficas: Far From Heaven/"Longe do Paraíso" (2002), The Hours/"As Horas"(2002), 25th Hour/"A Última Hora"(2002) e Cidade de Deus(2002).

Vamos por partes:



- Far From Heaven, filme realizado por Todd Haynes (Velvet Goldmine(1998)) e inspirado nos melodramas da década de 50 dirigidos por Douglas Sirk, é um filme possuidor de boas interpretações por parte do elenco (destaco a fabulosa Julianne Moore), realização segura, belíssima (no sentido literal da palavra) fotografia (vénias a Edward Lachman), excelente reconstituição de época e argumento focado em temáticas que afligem a sociedade moderna (exemplos: racismo, discriminação sexual, etc.). Tecnicamente irreprensível, este filme de Haynes é uma obra indelevelmente tocante e a que ninguém pode ficar indiferente. Nomeado para 4 Oscar.

- The Hours é antes de mais um filme completíssimo: tem um excelente argumento (torna-se difícil, pelo menos para mim, encontrar uma lacuna gigantesca na história), a realização (centrada nas personagens) de Stephen Daldlry, um elenco de luxo (de Streep a Kidman, passando por Moore, Harris ou Danes, todos têm prestações estonteantes), fotografia límpida e com cores fortes, montagem genial... É uma obra que roça a perfeição. Os únicos (pequenos) defeitos que o filme tem são a história (o argumento adaptado não consegue ser, por vezes, suficientemente coeso para suportar a complexidade do argumento original) e a música (Philip Glass podia ter atingido um nível superior ao bom). Inesquecível por tudo e mais alguma coisa.

- 25th Hour, última obra de Spike Lee, é um tratado imenso sobre os laços de amizade e amor que um cidadão comum , de uma Nova Iorque desencantada, perde e reconquista com os seus amigos e familires. Em todo o filme destaco com especial estima duas cenas marcantes: o já clássico e memorável monólogo de Monty em frente ao espelho onde este , num acesso de raiva e descontrolo emocional, insulta todo tipo de etnias e minorias residentes na cidade que nunca dorme e o diálogo (dentro de um apartamento) de dois amigos próximos de Monty em frente aos restos poeirentos das já extintas Torres Gémeas, em resultado do fatídico 11 de Detembro de 2001... A não perder.

Olá a todos os amantes de cinema!

O mês de Novembro é indiscutivelmente um dos mais ricos e diversificados do ano cinematográfico de 2003, senão vejamos: temos em cartaz Kill Bill - Vol. 1 o 4º filme (e que filme!) desse génio chamado Quentin Tarantino; de seguida temos um dos filmes mais arrojados e inclassificáveis (no seu género fí­lmico) do realizador Lars Von Trier,Dogville, gerador de opiniões extremamente opostas; seguem-se o comovente filme Whale Rider de Niki Caro, a nova obra de Kevin Coster (Open Range), que tem tido um carreira desastrosa nos últimos anos; o novo filme de François Ozon , o muito aclamado Swimming Pool; o muito aguardado Matrix Revolutions dos irmãos Wachowski e Os Imortais de António-Pedro Vasconcelos.

Breve comentário: Poucos são os realizadores que no mundo do cinema se podem dar ao luxo de com apenas três filmes no currí­culo serem considerados um dos mais influentes e importantes cineastas de todos os tempos- Quentin Tarantino é um desses raros casos. Nascido nos E.U.A, a 27 de Março de 1963, QT antes de ser actor, realizador, argumentista e produtor é um GRANDE cinéfilo, com um base de conhecimentos cinematográficos vastí­ssima- como tal não necessitou de qualquer curso académico para realizar um dos melhores filmes dos anos 90: o inolvidável Pulp Fiction (1994), recorrendo unicamente a múltiplas referências dos inúmeros filmes que viu no decorrer da sua vida. Kill Bill: Vol. 1 é um filme de filmes, baseado em variadí­ssimos géneros (western spaghetti, animação nipónica, giallos italianos, kung fu...) e que resulta muití­ssimo bem na homenagem que faz a todos eles; apesar de ser pontuado por momentos de inegá¡vel beleza estética/poética e sonoridade divina , nota-se claramente a falta do humor negro e diálogos mordazes tão pantentes nos filmes anteriores (para além do já referido PF temos igualmente o bombástico e sangrento filme de estreia de Tarantino na realização, Reservoir Dogs/Cães Danados(1992) e Jackie Brown (1997)). Resumindo: Kill Bill: Vol. 1 é um festim visual e musical que carece do sumo narrativo característico nos filmes do realizador.

Breve comentá¡rio: José Vieira Mendes escreve na PREMIERE (Ano 4; nº 48; Outubro 2003) uma frase que na minha opinião sintetiza todo o filme : " Dogville é um objecto deslumbrante mas muito difícil de definir, pois a natureza da sua proposta é tão arrojada, inovadora e bela, que não tem parâmetros conhecidos, creio, na história do cinema mundial". Dogville é de facto uma obra sem paralelo na história do cinema, fundindo o teatro e a sétima arte num só, criando assim sentimentos de amor-ódio (uns dizem que é uma obra-prima sem igual, outros referem que não passa de um devaneio do realizador). O filme pontua pelo argumento forte e lacónico (que desenha um quadro pitoresco de uma América profunda e deprimida dos anos 30, onde os sete pecados mortais são o "pão nosso do dia-a-dia"!), fotografia de Anthony Dod Mantle, ausência de cenários , elenco talentoso (destaco a talentosa actriz oscarizada Nicole Kidman que prova aqui ser uma das melhores actrizes de sempre e ainda a ressuscitada Lauren Bacall) e originalidade; no lado negativo refere-se obviamente a ousadia implícita na feitura do filme, algo que poderá levar á revolta de determinados espectadores.

Breve comentário: Filmado na belíssima aldeia Whangara (Nova Zelândia), Whale Rider é um filme intimista e femeninista (à semelhança da obra comovente The Piano / "O Piano" (1993), de Jane Campion). A pequena jovem actriz Keisha Castle-Hughes é para Whale Rider o que Anna Paquin foi para a obra de Campion- o seu talento é enorme e a sua prestação magnética. Uma obra a não perder pela beleza e impacto das imagens simbólicas e mensagem subjacente.

Breve comentário: Elephant é seguramente na minha opinião um dos melhores filmes do ano (a par de Cidade de Deus, 25th Hour, Ying xiong (Hero), Good bye, Lenin! e The Hours). A realização experimentalista de Gus Van Sant é prodigiosa pois não tem como finalidade justificar a tragédia do liceu Columbine, saber quais as causas de tal acontecimento fatídico, mas sim seguir os passos de vários adolescentes durante o seu dia-a-dia segundo vários pontos de vista ou prespectivas. É acima de tudo um filme sensacionista, opondo-se claramente à racionalidade patente no documentário de Michael Moore Bowling for Columbine - no decorrer do filme os sentimentos desnudam-se e os corpos deambulam; à semelhança de outro filme, Mystic River de Clint Eastwood, é um obra fílmica que aborda temas polémicos (homossexualidade, porte de armas de fogo, etc.), expondo inteligentemente as feridas profundas de uma América que uns querem esconder a todo custo e que outros pretendem denunciar e resolver sem demora. Por ser um filme deixa mais perguntas que respostas, Elephant é um objecto cinematográfico controverso, ousado e radical mas também genial, brilhante e inesquecível. O elenco amador, a fotografia (e suas tonalidades vivas, puras e fortes), a música (imprescindível na descrição psicológica/emocional das personagens- lembro-me perfeitamente de uma cena fabulosa em que um dos jovens conturbados toca no piano um excerto da sétima sinfonia de Beethoven - foi um momento divino que me devolveu o sentimento de PRAZER cinematográfico há muito tempo perdido) e a montagem são destaques óbvios num filme tecnicamente quase perfeita.
